19th Century French Cast Iron Mortar with Pestle

About the Item

With its solid proportions and sculptural form, this antique cast iron mortar and pestle is a one of a kind find. Made in France in the 1800s, this piece would have been an integral part of a Provincial kitchen, or chemist– used for grinding spices and herbs. The graceful bell shape of the mortar, flanked by a pair of rounded handles, creates an attractive silhouette, accentuated by the dark, textural patina of the iron. Practical and evocative, this remarkable period piece conjures the romantic atmosphere of the French country home.
