"Fish Bowl by the Window", Early and Important Footed Enamel Bowl by Winter
About the Item
A brilliant and early example of enamel art in America, this footed bowl depicts a fish bowl sitting on a long table, with a Classical-Art Deco chair against one wall, and figured curtains at the window. The color palette is beautiful, with somber ivory and black tones contrasting with gorgeous blues, pinks and purples. The artist was Edward Winter, one of America's first masters of enamel art, and this very fine example shows his application of the fine arts, including printmaking and painting, to enamel work, newly embraced by American artists in the 1930s-1940s. Winter attended the Cleveland Institute of Art and studied in Vienna before teaching at the Cleveland School of Art.
