"Dove in Flight, " Art Deco Masterpiece in Cerulean and Lemon Enamel by Winter
About the Item
Created by one of the great masters of enamel artistry in America, this wide, shallow dish/bowl bathed in brilliant yellow and cerulean blue enamels over copper depicts a dove in flight, flanked by branches with leaves and berries. The artist was Edward Winter, and this piece demonstrates his application of the Fine Arts, including printmaking and painting, to enamel work, newly embraced by American artists in the 1930s and 1940s. Winter attended the Cleveland Institute of Art and studied in Vienna before teaching at the Cleveland School of Art.

Edward Winter
Harold Edward Winter was an American artist who worked primarily in enamels. Winter was born in Pasadena, California, to John Edward Winter and Lila Winter. He studied art in Vienna, Austria, and went on to teach at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Old White Art Colony in West Virginia. In December 1939, he married the ceramist Thelma Frazier. Winter died in 1976, and Thelma died the following year.
