Large Chinese Export Punchbowl with Staple Repairs, 18th Century

About the Item

A remarkable large Chinese export blue and white punchbowl painted with a floral and brocade design, and featuring a stunning staple repair, 18th century, China. While of large size and beautifully painted, what makes this piece exceptional is the staple repairs on it. It is remarkable not only for the amount of staples, but also for the fact that it seems to have been repaired twice. There are two sets of staples present. An older set of iron, of which only remnants remain, and a newer set in tin, with a distinct double staple technique. In total, there are more than 130 staples or remnants of staples in the piece, plus one large tin plate with lead solder. Staple or rivet repairs were a common way to fix expensive or treasured broken ceramics or porcelains before the advent of quick drying glue and epoxy.
