Lignum Vitae English Treen Footed Bowl (Tazza)
About the Item
A handsome turned wooden vessel, hewn from a single piece of lignum vitae, presented in a classic two tone sapwood/heartwood contrasting design: richly veined dark heartwood on the outside with deep caramel tones on the interior. Lignum vitae is a very dense and hard wood from trees native to Caribbean and South American lands and islands. It has been used for high quality specialized tools, ship fittings and domestic accessories for centuries. Lathe turned bowls and tazzas like this one have also been made for several hundred years, with variations in size ranging from small cups and stemware to large wassail bowls of about 12 inches diameter. This example dates probably to the late19th/early 20th century.
