Set of Four Stoneware Bowls in Shino Style by Warren Mackenzie

About the Item

A set of four stoneware tea bowl by American ceramist Warren Mackenzie (1924-2018). The bowls were potted free-handed with slightly irregular circular shape. Presented as two pairs, the surface of the bowls was covered in a glossy beige color glaze with tiny black specks, on top of which abstract pattern with deft strokes were painted in contrasting colors. The aethetic and technique evokes the e-shino ware although it is more a modern reinterpretation. One pair is stamped by the foot ring. Warren MacKenzie was a student of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the British and Japanese potters who were masters of Mingei (folk art) pottery. Mackinzie is credited with bringing the functional Mingei tradition to the United States and spreading it through his own art and mentorship during his long tenure at the University of Minnesota.
