"Shipbuilding in Brittany, " Unique Art Deco Bowl in Blue, Deep Pink by Quimper
About the Item
Brilliantly glazed in rich, bold hues -- ocean blue, canary yellow, deep pink, and charcoal -- this unique, large bowl depicts a shipbuilding scene in Brittany, designed by George Renaud for the famed Quimper pottery firm. Three workers are shown sawing wood and assembling pieces of the boats under construction, and in the background the sails of finished ships form a kaleidoscope of color. Since 1708, this kind of vividly-glazed faience was produced and painted by artists in the historical faience quarter of the city of Quimper. The bottom is well marked with the name of the artist and maker.
