Contemporary Japanese Green Red Gold Porcelain Box by Master Artist

About the Item

Extraordinary Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain box, intricately hand-painted and gilded on a stunning progression of hexagons on a beautifully shaped round body in red and green with generous gold application, a signed masterpiece by highly acclaimed award-winning master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of Japan (1931-2009). This piece was part of a collection of this artist's lifelong works that remained in his kiln and was recently released by his two sons who continue to manage the kiln. This exceptional artist was widely admired for his depiction of scenes of nature and extremely intricate and miniature like geometric patterns. His legacy lives on through his two sons, acclaimed porcelain artists in their own right, each of whom specializes in one aspect of their father’s style. This contemporary porcelain box features an extremely intricate hexagonal pattern that fully covers the entire body of the vase, growing progressively smaller as it approaches the top and the base. Each hexagon encapsulates a paulownia leaf-and-flower design widely used in family crests in Japan. This particular design is known as the “5-3 paulownia crest” that combines three leaves with an inflorescence of 3-5-3 flowers. Blue and gold bands highlight the hexagons to accentuate the iron red background. This mesmerizing piece comes in the original wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 5.5 in, D 8.5 in.

Kinrande style hand-painting represents Arita porcelain, which appeared in the Edo period (1688-1704) and has been handed down to the present day. The colors are deep, and red and gold are used luxuriously, and flower patterns are drawn on the surface of the vessel. This style is thought to reflect the spirit of the Genroku era, which was economically abundant. It is highly decorative and many kinrande works, such as large lidded vases...
