Group of Frankfurt Kitchen Storage Elements, Germany
About the Item
Group of four "Frankfurter Küche" storage elements attributed to the Austrian architect Margarethe Schütte-Lihotzky (1897 - 2000). Bauhaus era.
The aluminium boxes were produced by Gebrüder Haarer, and have their stamp. They are labelled to identify their contents - Mehl (Flour), Salz (Salt), Zucker (Sugar) and Verschiedenes (Miscellaneous) - and originally they would have been housed in a bank of small storage elements to fit the needs of the household. Now, however, these pieces are offered as decorative objects; each one is in nice vintage condition with minor signs of wear from age and use, and a mellow patina to the metal.
Approximate dimensions per piece:
H: 14cm
W: 11cm
D: 28.5 / 24cm (with / without handle)
Schütte-Lihotzky was part of the team that developed what was known as the Frankfurt Kitchen, and an original example can be seen today in the Mayhaus in Römerstadt, Germany - a restored terraced house from 1927. Showroom examples have been displayed by major museums throughout the world, and more details can be found on the website of the V&A in London.
