Minton Majolica Purple Grape Cluster on Green Leaf Covered Box, date marked 1861

About the Item

We rarely use the term rare … here we have a VERY rare covered majolica box in the form of a cluster of grapes on a leaf tray, made by Minton in England, date marked 1861. One of only two known examples. For the most discerning of collectors. The cluster of grapes is realistically modeled and glazed in a gorgeous purple-blue, with an interesting treatment to the molding of the stem network. The grapes sit on a green grape vine leaf showing exceptional movement, with openwork molding where the stem meets the leaf. The interior of both the base and lid are finished in the beautiful blue glaze particular to Minton pieces. Minton Majolica was created by Joseph Leon Francois Arnoux, who was appointed art director in 1848. Arnoux used a sturdy, thick bodied clay coated in an opaque white glaze, and over painted with brightly colored lead based glazes. This pottery was exhibited at The Great Exhibition of 1851. Provenance: From the collection of Charles Washburne Antiques of Solebury, Pennsylvania, and Chappaqua, New York. 6 in. L x 5 in. W x 3.5 in. H Marked: Impressed Minton, with the Y shaped date stamp used for the year 1861. Overall in very good antique condition. Minor nipping to the underside of the lid, unseen when seated.

Attributed to Minton pottery in Staffordshire, England, a scarce sized set of majolica glazed pitchers in the Palissy style, circa 1870s. The Aesthetic Period pitchers are molded with a raised nut vine pattern with leaves in light and dark green, and closed buds. The vine handle is ‘held’ in place with green shoots, the tight buds are glazed in cream encased in light spring green leaves. The body is finished in an iridescent brown, the interior in a beautiful turquoise. A turquoise glazed underside. The larger jug is impressed with the number two, possibly referring to size, as this is the middle size of what would have been a set of three graduated pitchers...
