Castle Top Vinaigrette Made in Birmingham in 1844 by John Tongue

About the Item

Windsor Castle. An extremely rare Castle Top Vinaigrette made in Birmingham in 1844 by John Tongue. This very rare Vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form and both the sides and base are decorated with engine turned engraving, within raised foliate borders. The base is also centred by a shield shaped cartouche containing a set of contemporary script initials. The castle top cover displays a crisp, rare, raised scene, in high releif, of Windsor Castle from the West with the Round Tower in a three dimentional effect. Windsor was a popular view on Vinaigrettes, however this is one of the rarest views of this subject and a similar example, by Nathaniel Mills, of the same date, is shown in Eric Delieb's, "Investing in Silver", page 115. The interior is well marked, as well as displaying a Queen's head duty mark on the underside of the grille. The interior is also finely gilded and the grille is beautifully pierced and engraved with pluming scrolls and a vase of flowers. John Tongue was an exceptionally fine box maker working in the circle of Nathaniel Mills during this period. His work is of the same quality, if not better, than that of Mills and the detail shown on the box is exceptional. Length: 1.5 inches, 3.75 cm. Width: 1.1 inches, 2.75 cm. Depth: 0.4 inches, 1 cm.

Maker: John Tongue, Birmingham, 1851 Weight: 18.5g " The Great Exhibition of 1851 was held in London inside an enormous structure of iron and glass known as the Crystal Palace. In five months, from May to October 1851, six million visitors thronged the gigantic trade show, marvelling over the latest technology as well as displays of artefacts from around the world. The stunning display of inventions, works of art, and objects collected in distant lands was something of a precursor of a World's Fair. In fact, some newspapers referred to it as such. And it had a definite purpose: the rulers of Britain intended to show the world that technology was bringing uplifting changes to society and Britain was leading the race into the future. The idea of the Great Exhibition originated with Henry Cole...
