Vinaigrette Made in Birmingham by Edward Smith in 1845

About the Item

A very fine & unusual cased vinaigrette made in Birmingham in 1845 by Edward Smith This exceptional example is modelled in an unusual, almost square, form with a cast foliate frame on the cover and the base. Both the base, sides and cover are engraved with engine turned designs and the base displays a vacant rectangular cartouche. The cover is most unusually inset with a very rare shaded agate panel which, when first seen, was the first time we had seen this type of agate inset into the top of a vinaigrette. The agate is also surrounded by a cast foliate frame. The interior displays a very fine gilding and a grille pierced and engraved with pluming feathery scrolls. This fine example is contained within a silk and velvet lined case. Additional information: Length: 1.5 inches, 3.75 cm. Width: 1.45 inches, 3.63 cm.
