Victorian Sterling Silver Tea Caddy/Box

About the Item

A magnificent, fine and impressive, rare antique Victorian English sterling silver tea caddy/box in the form of a nutmeg; an addition to our silver teaware collection This magnificent and rare antique Victorian sterling silver box/tea caddy has been modelled in the form of a nutmeg. The body of this fine silver box has a naturalistic textured form, replicating the seed's shell. This antique sterling silver tea caddy retains the original hallmarked domed hinged cover surmounted with the original finial replicating the details of a stem. The box is further fitted with a swing handle bearing textured details and interlacing with the aforementioned finial; this impressive and individualistic mechanism indicates the high quality of the piece. The box is supported by an interlocking frame of four silver branch strands, comprising eight feet. This magnificent and rare example of antique silverware was originally a tea caddy, however, by virtue of its size this versatile box could be used for a multitude of functions. This exceptional box was crafted by John Thomas Heath & John Hartshorne Middleton of Hukin & Heath, subsequently Hukin & Heath Ltd. This nutmeg shaped sterling silver box is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. Condition This antique silver tea caddy is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the caddy and part hallmarks to the interior of the cover and surface of the handle are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this impressive nutmeg shaped sterling silver box.
