Victorian Tunbridge Ware Tea Caddy
About the Item
A Charming 19th Century Tunbridge Ware Tea Caddy With Attractive Floral Band To Main Body And Parquetry Perspective Cubes To Hinged Lid Enclosing Lidded Interior.
Tea was an extremely valuable commodity throughout the course of the 18th and 19th centuries. Therefore of course something was required to store the precious tea leaves in and ensure that they remain in their peak condition for as long as possible, whilst at the same time offering a little security to stop any wandering hands.
Tunbridge Ware originates, as the name suggests, from the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Generally the pieces which were made here feature a variety of different print designs to the centre, which often included images related to Tunbridge itself. The central images would normally be enhanced and embellished by borders of either floral, or geometric designs. Towards the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century Perspective Cube (Parquetry) and other geometric patterns began to be used as a focal point and allowed for the use of various exotic timbers.
This tea caddy comes with a fully functioning lock and key, plus has been cleaned and traditionally waxed polished by our highly skilled and well trained specialist antique furniture restorers in our workshops before being offered for sale.
