Pair of 6-flame candelabra, 13 soldered silver Germany c. 1860

About the Item

Pair of 6-flame candelabra, 13 soldered silver, baluster shaft and round stand with chased meandering, Germany around 1860, weight 2,180 grams Height 47 cm The term "candelabra" has its origins in Latin. It is derived from the word "candelabrum", which means "candlestick" or "candlestick holder". In metallurgy, and particularly in coinage up until the 19th century, a perl (formerly lot) was an old unit of measurement for the relative fineness (grain) to the total weight (shot). A lot was therefore a ratio measure of the precious metal content in a metal product. For example, the total weight of silver was divided into 16 (proportional) lots until around 1857. After that a "twelve-piece" silver alloy ("silver 750") contained 12/16 = ¾ or 75 % of the weight of silver and 25 % of other metal (usually copper). a "thirteen-solder" silver alloy ("silver 812.5") contained 13/16 or 81.25 % of the weight of silver.
