George I Lacquered Longcase Clock by Peregrine Tawney, London

About the Item

George I Longcase Clock with gilt floral decorated to the sides. Long break arch trunk door with beautifully raised Chinoiserie scenes of pavilions and rural life. The plinth also has similar scenes and stands upon skirting. The break arch hood has side viewing windows and integral pillars with quarter pillars to the back with gilded capitals. Twelve inch break arch brass dial with wheatear border engraving, silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and Fleur De Lys half hour markers. Finely matted centre with silvered seconds dial and calendar aperture. Silvered raised boss to the arch signed ‘Pere. Tawney, London’. Finely pierced ‘blued’ steel hands. Eight day movement with turned and ringed pillars, anchor escapement with rack striking the hours on a large bell. This fine clock retains it’s original brass cased weights and brass rod pendulum with the unusual feature of a finely decorated pendulum bob with gilt and floral emblems. C.1720 Peregrine Tawney is recorded as working in London from c.1700 to 1730. The South Kensington Museum have a fine repeating pocket watch by him.

    This superb George I period antique longcase clock by Daniel Delander is cased in highly figured walnut veneer of lovely colour and patina. Standing on a double plinth there is a panelled base and moulded trunk door. The pull forward hood is flanked by quarter columns with brass capitals. The case retains the original caddy top surmounted by two finials. The square dial has an applied chapter ring with cherubin spandrels.
