William & Mary Floral Marquetry 8-Day Longcase Clock by LeCount 'LeCompte'

About the Item

A fine and rare William & Mary long case or grandfather clock by London maker Daniel LeCompte. c.1690, London, the fine marquetry case having oval panels of birds and flowers, the movement signed Daniel LeCount (LeCompte) having a silver chapter ring and seconds dial, brass spandrels of cupids supporting a crown; including key, weights and pendulum. LeCompte was a French Huguenot clock maker who immigrated to England in the late 17th century. This tall clock has exceptional marquetry and the works are consistent with late 17th century clock works and clocks by LeCompte. A very similar example by LeCompte at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The works are consistent with late 17th century English clockworks. The clock is in very good condition, with some early repairs to veneers, minor losses, overall light to moderate wear consistent with age and normal use, and strikes on the hour.
