French, Greek Revolution or Hellenistic Mantel Clock of Turk on Horseback

About the Item

French Greek Revolution or Hellenistic mantel clock of Greek hero on horseback. Constructed of the very finest cast bronze and fire gilded ormolu and in excellent original condition. The rearing horse beautifully modelled, cast and finished in patinated bronze. The typical rectangular base with bracket fee and swept plinth. The clock itself set in a naturalistic rocky outcrop in patinated bronze and has a white enamel dial within a fine ormolu bezel. The hands of moon form. The movement is of 8 day duration and strikes the hours and halves upon a cast French bell. The timekeeping is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. The inspiration for this clock is undoubtedly from the paintings of Carle Vernet an early war artist, if you like, who accompanied Napoleon throughout his middle eastern campaign and afterwards.
