Rococo Giltwood Clock

About the Item

Fine 18th century rococo carved and giltwood shelf clock, the crest with stork holding a bone in his beak pearched on a romantic castle ruin with carved foliate decoration, vines and trees, the platform with wolf emerging from a quoin embellished entryway standing on turned bun feet. This clock is a visual representation of Aesop's fable of the stork and the wolf wherein the stork happened upon a wolf with a bone stuck in its throat. The wolf pleaded with the stork to remove it and the stork reluctantly agreed when it was offered a reward. After the successful extraction, the wolf turned to walk away and the stork asked after its reward, only to be informed that the stork now had the boasting right to say it had stuck its head in the mouth of a wolf and survived. That alone was the reward.
