About the Item
George II bracket clock by Thomas Wagstaffe, London
Ebonised bell top case surmounted by a hinged brass carrying handle standing on a raised plinth and resting on four pad feet. Cast brass upper quadrant silk lined frets, glazed side windows and roundels with a glazed rear door to view the movement.
Eight day double fusee movement with fine wheelwork and original verge escapement regulated by a short bob pendulum striking the hours on a silvered bell, with strike / silent facility. The backplate profusely engraved with foliate scrolls, the brackets similarly engraved.
Brass dial with raised silvered chapter ring, finely matted centre, finely cut original ‘blued’ steel hands, gilded spandrels, calendar aperture and subsidiary dial in the arch for strike/silent. Silvered cartouche signed ‘Tho. Wagstaffe, London’. C.1760
Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world by Brian Loomes lists Thomas Wagstaffe as working from both Carey Street and Gracechurch Street London from 1756-1793.
