A Restauration Patina and Fire-Gilt Clock Depicting Virgil

About the Item

This clocks serves as an exquisite example of the blend of patinated bronze with fire-gilding popular in period 1815-30 among French artisans. The subject, the Roman poet Virgil, who worked under Augustus to pen the founding tale of Rome, The Aeneid, as well as The Georgics, bucolic tales, is dutifully classical in the Napoleonic tradition. What’s postclassical is the mixture of tones as well as the finely-wrought dial. Virgil holds a plaque displaying the names of his works (in case you didn’t know?). The silk mechanism is in good functioning condition. Key and pendulum included.
