19th Century Set of 5 Bavarian Black Forest Ebonised Picture Frames Folk Art
About the Item
A beautifully carved set of five Bavarian ebonised picture frames elaborately carved using the ‘notch cut’ technique, each frame held together with a cross-lap joint. Dating from the mid 19th Century, the set of five matching hand-carved fruitwood picture frames were bought from Berchtesgaden on the Austrian/German border. Three of the frames retain period cut glass and wooden backs, whilst two are without glass and contain period photographs, and all have wall hangers.
Each measuring roughly: 21.5cm H x 16cm W x 1.5cm D
PLEASE NOTE: I have two other sets available in store - please see last image for a group shot.
The region's best-known handicraft is the "Berchtesgadener War" - wooden products made and painted by hand in the snow-free months by the poor Berchtesgaden farmers as a sideline. The pieces were carried by peddlers from the princely Berchtesgadener Land to the cities and neighbouring countries, providing the locals with a source of secondary income that was essential to their survival. In 1805, there were 641 wood craftsmen in Berchtesgaden still carving and turning wood!
