Victorian Pierced and Etched Brass Pietra Dura Triple Fold Out Picture Frame

About the Item

This ornamental 19th century tabletop triple picture frame was made in England by London based luxury goods and box manufacturer Halstaff and Hannaford of Regent Street. The brass frame has an ornate reticulated design with an etched foliate motif and features an inset oval pietra dura plaque on the front. The plaque has been decorated with stone inlay in the form of a figural bouquet that includes white lilies and blue forget-me-nots along with green foliage, all of which are set against a black ground. The oval portion of the piece opens and folds out to reveal three picture frames. The piece comes complete with its original easel-style brass support at the back. The picture frame is in very good condition showing signs of age including minor marks to the pietra dura and light scratches/tarnish to the brass which are mentioned for accuracy. It should also be noted that the pietra dura has undergone restoration by a professional conservator and as seen in the accompanying photos displays beautifully. The frame stands 7" tall and is 4.5" deep when the support is extended. The piece is 6" across as measured from the outside points of the front feet. The pietra dura plaque itself is 2.75" by 1.5". The three picture frame openings each measure 3.375" by 2.125". The piece measures 8" across from edge to edge when the frames are fully extended. The back of the support has been stamped with the words "HALSTAFF & HANNAFORD" along with the address "228 REGENT STREET". The piece weighs 1lb 6oz. This lovely Victorian brass pietra dura triple picture frame would be a wonderful addition to a collection of antique frames. An elegant and useful piece. A note on the maker: Halstaff and Hannaford traces its origins to 1825 when the company was established on London's Margaret Street by William Halstaff. Halstaff joined with Thomas Charles Hannaford in 1842 and moved to 228 Regent Street in 1838. They went on to trade under the name Halstaff & Hannaford until 1898 when the business name was changed to Halstaff & Co.
