1980’s Artist Made Found Object Carved Wood and Electronic Sculptural Skeleton

About the Item

A vintage, circa 1980's artist made found object sculptural skeleton on a stand. A unique piece exquisitely made, designed, carved, engineered, constructed and now presented. The head sits atop copper tubing and holds the 'brains' of the piece - the wiring and circuitry. The body - the torso, legs, etc - are hand carved from solid wood as well as a white formica type of material. One of the arms is a resin like material in the style of bone ending in a metal and glass hand while the other arm is metal and wire with a solid wood, hand carved hand. Perhaps a visionary tale, a la the Terminator. But a little bit different. A figure from the past who foretells our future. A future where man and machine are inextricably melded, joined and unified. Where one is hard pressed to see where the organic matter ends and the technology begins. The story goes that this was made for the theatre and the skeleton is animatronic, with a head that can turn from side to side and eyes that light up. While I have not tested this, TSA was quite interested in the wiring when I was bringing this home in my carry-on luggage. But that's a story for another day. In the meantime, I hope you connect with this one-of-a-kind find.

  • James Schwabe Sterling Silver and Gemstone Lion Sculpture Mounted on Malachite
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A sterling silver sculpted lion by late American artist James Schwabe (1918 - 2008) mounted onto malachite. The eyes of the lion are gemstone (possibly cabochon emerald) and there appear to be highlights in a golden metal. The sculpture is signed on the malachite, J. Schwabe and there looks to be a number under the signature. It has been postulated that Mr. Schwabe sold his jewelry in New York under the brand, Patrice and Realm. Mr. Schwabe did design jewelry and other pieces in precious metals and gemstones for Cartier. This sculpture depicts a fierce and cute lion, seated on its haunches with its green eyes wide open. The lion sits patiently on a block of malachite, enjoying a polished surface contrasted with the natural form. So if you still have a curio cabinet, then make some room on the top shelf for this work. And if you have a vanity, then I'm sure this work will look beautiful next to your collection of boxes...

John Seubert The Mythologist found objects 20.50H x 8.50W x 8D in 52.07H x 21.59W x 20.32D cm JSE042 In the early Nineties, John Seubert was living in a former hotel in a high-rise building on St. James Place in Chicago. The apartment was tiny, as hotel rooms tend to be, and clad with paper-thin walls allowing sound to pass from one apartment to the other. At the time, John’s artwork consisted of pounding copper sheets into tables which was a noisy endeavor to say the least. Following several noise complaints from the neighbors, John had a dream that he was living in a ramshackle house but with plenty of room to work and no attached neighbors. The following day after lunching at the McDonalds in Lincoln Park, John wandered the neighborhood a came upon a shabby, falling-down old Victorian house. He located the real estate agent...
