"Split" Head with Numbers by David Gill for Bennington Potters

About the Item

This is an interesting sculpture for Bennington Potters by artist David Gill (1922-2002) depicting a head with imprinted numbers made of two halves. The two stoneware halves are attached to a piece of lucite that is attached to a rectangular lacquered black wooden base. One can draw their own conclusions on the meaning of the numbers! In the 1950's David Gill opened Bennington Potters with other well known artists of the time in order to produce affordable limited artwork. This piece is from the 1960's and is stamped on one of interior head halves. It is stamped, "Bennington Potters/Bennington//Vermont///1850". 1850 refers to the number of the piece. A wonderful and clever gift for either a collector of mid-century art or an accountant! Artist David Gill was born in 1922 to immigrant parents and grew up in Harlem, New York. Timing came into play when he was welcomed to make art under President Roosevelt’s arts-friendly Works Progress Administration. Gill was hired in 1939, as a teenager, to sculpt pottery in public as a demonstration at the World’s Fair in New York. He attended New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, serving time in the Merchant Marines during WWII amidst his studies. Gill then moved to Bennington, Vermont with plans to open a design studio. He collaborated with other modern artists and designers and formed Cooperative Design, which Gill later changed to Bennington Potters. He was the driving force of a collaboration of famous mid 20th century artist that produced affordable limited edition ceramic items. By the 1970s, David Gill and Bennington Potters had established a studio that was revered for quality art available to the masses. *Above information from Vermont Arts and Living.
