French Antique Bronze Sculpture of Mother Bear and Cubs by Paul E. Delabrierre

About the Item

PAUL-ÉDOUARD DELABRIÈRRE French, 1829-1912 "Famille d'Ors" [Mother Bear and Her Cubs] Medium-and-light brown patina on sand-cast bronze Signed in cast "E. DELABRIERRE" foundry marking verso "D. et S." Item # 202APF12Z A very nice sand-casting of Delabrierre's Mother Bear and Her Cubs, this scarce model is perhaps his most endearing. Presumably being cast after his 1850 submission to the Paris Salon [no. 3306] of Famille d' Ours, the model captures the distinctly human characteristics of the beast and her young. The larger cub sleeps on her withdrawn arm and shoulder with its head resting on an outstretched paw while the smaller sibling feeds off of his mother in the hollow formed by their bodies. The scene is spinning in a circular tumble of three intertwined bodies resting on a rough cave floor. The foundry marking verso of "D. et S." is unknown to us, but another model by Delabrierre was also cast by the same foundry. While the detail is exquisite with very fine texturing of paws, claws, hair and noses - with particularly fine attention being shown to the uppermost bear cub and its facial features - the model is cold-tooled with a high degree of chiseling and foundry finishing work indicative of an older mold; this places the model casting date closer to circa 1900. Unusual and quite difficult to find, this is a most pleasant look at the softer side of this powerful creature. Measurements: 7" H x 8 1/4" diameter Condition Report: Very fine original condition, some minor wear to patina around base. Cleaned and sealed in conservator-grade wax. The two cubs sit at total peace beneath their powerful mother, her head lowered in a low growl as she likely threatens a fellow lion away from the meal of rabbit she has brought for her cubs. "HARVESTER" AFTER A MODEL BY MATHURIN MOREAU (FRENCH, 1822-1912) In a reddish-brown and golden patinated bronze; signed in base "Math. Moreau" Item # 012SKP14W A fine model of a rural young farmer resting against a rocky outcrop to sharpen his scythe, the base of which has been set in the hay collected in a pile beside the rock; the naturalistic base is signed along the back in his typical nearly cursive script "Math. Moreau". It is a complex model and a fine accomplishment for the foundry, the joints seamlessly flowing into one another without any obvious connections. The surface is chiseled with great care, resulting in fine detailing of the toes and fingers to include the wrinkles at each joint and texturing of the nails, crisp eyelids and flawless skin, gorgeous texturing of the garment...
