Mythical Beast Coconut Splitter, c. 1900

About the Item

This sculptural early 20th century coconut splitter was carved into the form of a crouching beast ready to pounce. It was likely a merchant's tool in a Southeast Asian market used to split coconuts which were then ground into fine snow-like flakes for use in dumplings, sauces and sweetmeats.
