About the Item

‘Time Is A Treasure VI’ is a hand-made communicative zoomorphic sculpture and clock. The burnished bronze exterior shapes a very tall standing mother spider, while the blue agate head opens onto a polished mirror interior which reveals a concealed but distinctly ticking clock. An appeal to our imagination, sensitivity and the ability of each of us to dream. This strange and endearing creature ticks and rings. It is perfectly representative of Nacho Carbonell, a graduate with a first class honours degree from the Design Academy Eindhoven (2007) named ‘Designer of the Future’ at Design Miami/Basel in June 2009 at age 28. His work is included in the collections of the FNAC-Fonds National d’Art Contemporain (French national contemporary art collection) and in the United States in the MoMA San Francisco, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Mint Museum. The starting point of this project: slices of blue agate, the interior of which was kept by French jewellery houses to create jewelry and clocks. Nacho Carbonell chose to reinstate these neglected stones with their own right to become clocks too, reinterpreting them in the light of his approach at the junction of mineralogy and genetic manipulation. “I was working with the idea of time. I had this concept already in mind about how we interpret time and how we look at time. We all have a ticking clock within us. I wanted to represent this idea by creating some creatures you could really look inside of and see their “time life”. So in the end the stones gave me the idea of what they wanted to be. Their frustration fuelled their desire. By imagining my own clocks, I wanted to reinstate them with what had been taken from them”. The ‘Time Is A Treasure‘ collection, at the boundaries of Art and Design, expands the immediately distinctive Carbonell family with these works incorporating hard stones for the first time. A far cry from the principle according to which form follows function, Carbonell breaks with all conventions to develop, from material and a narrative intention, clocks which one can hear but can only be seen if one takes the trouble to look deeper within.
