Ceramic Sculpture Viviana Head by Vanessa Semaino
About the Item
The “Surolù” art works - this is artistic identity chosen by Vanessa Semaino - arise from the artist 's need to represent women’s condition today, particularly in their emotional states that confer their unique identities. These precious ceramic sculptures, entirely handcrafted and decorated, represent female Moor’s heads. They were conceived as an expression of an introspective journey that relates Vanessa’s Sicilian origins and to her professional experience in the fashion stylistic field.
The artist introduces, for the first time, the repeated use of sociological themes of current relevance through a visually immediate language, represented in her art works with a contemporary pop aesthetic.
In contemporary art, the interpretation of the seven deadly sins offers artists an opportunity to explore the complex nuances of humanity.
Viviana’s clothing is equally representative of her greed and ostentation of wealth. Her emerald-colored marabou turban, the lace decoration glimpsed at the neckline of her dress, and the gold zecchino jewelry she wears, including a Chanel necklace she holds between her teeth, assuming a provocative attitude; all this contributes to showcasing her thirst for possession. The choice of the name Viviana recalls Vivien Leigh, the actress who portrayed the character of “Gone with the Wind,” in which the artist found similarities with Viviana. Both women are intelligent, but at the same time self-centered, ambitious, strong, and seemingly superficial. The current representation of Viviana, like Vanessa Semaino’s other works, is ironic and amusing, with a strong pop connotation. The combination of this aspect, the use of accessories that characterize her as a fashion victim, along with the element of Sicilian identity of the Teste di Moro, expresses an original and unique artistic form.
