19th Century Spanish Torero / Bullfighter Bronze Sculpture, by Vallmitjana

About the Item

The bronze figure is 19th century, made by sculptor Agapito Vallmitjana (1833-1905) who was active in Barcelona, along with his brother Venancio, who was also a sculptor. They were both successful and well-known in their time, and their works are in public places and various collections in Spain, including a beautiful life-size marble Christ by Agapito in the Prado Museum, Madrid. An engraving showing a sculpted figure almost identical appears in the Spanish publication "La Academia" from the year 1879, as part of an article about Agapito Vallmitjana. So, we know this particular composition was created prior to this date (see illustration). This sculpture is located in the Northeastern United States, making shipping easier and less expensive for US buyers, all import fees and paperwork complete.
