19th Century Spanish Regency / Isabelina Mallorquín Commode, Marquetry Inlay

About the Item

Often referred to as "Mallorquín" or "Catalana" style, this type of commode evolved in the early to mid 19th century in the Spanish province of Catalonia, taking design influences from various European sources, the most obvious being the French Empire and Restoration styles, the gilt "winged lion's paw" feet unmistakable. The sinuous curving of the sides and use of lighter colored wood as a visual framing device for the darker central drawers places this particular commode as being made at earliest during the Maria Cristina Regency period, roughly 1830 - 1845, possibly into the Isabelina era of the 1860s. There are some marks of use, and it appears the estucheons (key hole surrounds) were changed at some point. Otherwise the furniture is solid with no structural problems, the fine inlay marquetry is complete with no losses, and drawers all function smoothly. Both a dramatic and practical storage piece.
