Austrian Painted Figure of a African American Boy, Signed Bernhard Bloch ca 1900

About the Item

This very lifelike figure of a young American black boy is a fine example of the work of Bernhard Block. The underside bears his signature "BB". He worked mainly in terracotta and was known for his finely detailed and meticulously painted figures. This young lad certainly fits that bill. The hollow stump behind the boy was probably used for smoking accoutrements, matches, cigars, etc.
