Cherub Carved from Wood with Polychrome & Gilt

About the Item

An Italian cherub, carved from linden wood wood. This graceful and exceptionally well-carved figure was likely part of an altar ensemble. The eyes and face are particularly well-formed and have a subtly plaintive expression. The wings are covered in actual gold gilt and the body in a gauche of natural mineral pigments. There is a real sense of movement in this piece, which we believe dates to the Baroque period.
