"Dancing African, " Rare Bronze Art Deco Sculpture by Hagenauer Contemporary

About the Item

Clearly showing the decades-old interest among Europeans in the art and culture of Africa -- starting with Cubism which borrowed heavily from African art -- and also demonstrating the influence of Franz Hagenauer and his family in Austria, this diminutive depiction of a dancing female nude was sculpted by Richard Rohac. Rohac had worked in the famed Hagenauer workshop for years, but left to set up his own studio in the 1940s, and produced a number of wares, including African figures in all manner of activities. This example is lovely and well-marked.
