"Right Jab, " Classic Art Deco Sculpture of Boxer, Nickel Finish by Hagenauer

About the Item

Sculpted by one of the greatest innovators in Art Deco sculpture in 1930s Europe, this nickeled brass figure of a boxer, his right arm reaching out to jab at his opponent, was made by the Hagenauer firm in Vienna. Hagenauer made an enormous array of sculptures in silver, bronze, brass, wood and chromed metal, depicting highly stylized human and animal figures that typically bring a smile of recognition -- and sometimes amusement -- to the viewer. Karl Hagenauer, who led the firm after his father, studied with Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad, later bringing the Wiener Werkstätte's design esthetic -- and the Art Deco style -- to the firm's productions. The boxer figures are rare, and this example date to the 1930s, though the firm continued to make Art Deco-influenced pieces into the 1950s, after World War II.

  • Popeye Sailor European Sculpture Ebony and Metal Art Deco Hagenauer
    By Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien
    Located in Oakland, CA
Popeye the Sailor, a European Sculpture in the style of Hagenauer made of Ebony wood and Metal in the Art Deco style. We have had a few pieces in this treatment, style and materials. They are very rare to find. This one is particularly interesting since it is an homage to the character of Popeye. This sculpture has a slightly cubist feeling with the treatment of black ebony and silver including the navy anchor on its arm obviously inspired by the original Popeye. It’s not a widely known fact that a real person inspired E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye. We have discovered was fashioned to resemble this man Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, whose parents immigrated from Poland to the United States. Rocky was born in 1868-1947 and as an adult he joined the navy. He was considered very strong and smoked a pipe, all characteristics of the cartoon Popeye which became such an important icon of protection, not allowing bullying or to be bulled. This Popeye Sailor sculpture...
