Stunning antique, hand carved church sculpture of the pieta from the 1800s.
If you are a collector of antique and top-quality works of art in general and of rare religious artefacts in particular then this top quality carved wooden sculpture from the mid-1800s could be flying your way soon. Over the decades we have owned and sold a number of impressive and sculptural works of religious art (most of them former church relics), but this stunning antique could very well be the most beautifully hand carved and patinated one. It is clear that over the many centuries the holy bible has inspired many a great artisan to create some of their best work ever and to us this Pieta sculpture is no exception. The sculptor whom created this one of a kind antique managed to create this most famous of biblical scenes out of a log of wood in such a realistic manner and with such underlying emotion that this can only be the work of a master carver. This incredibly powerful scene of Mother Mary mourning over her son Jesus (with Saint John and Mary Magdalene by Her side) also is patinated in amazing shades of warm colors. We acquired this stunning antique in Germany and the name underneath reads 'de Hontheim'. This was a family of 'German' nobles of whom several members had been on church boards as early as the 16th century. Even with one tiny piece of a toe missing on Jesus's left foot and two unusual strokes of paint on the back of the heads of Mother Mary and Saint John, we feel confident in saying that this unique and powerful Pieta sculpture is of museum quality and condition. Thanks to its durability this glorious antique can be enjoyed by you and your loved ones for the rest of your lives and by many generations after you.
