Grand Tour Equestrian Bronze. Italy, Circa:1820

About the Item

This bronze is a hand cast miniature copy of a life-size marble statue of Marcus Nonius Balbus the Younger which today stands in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The statue originally stood in the Forum of Herculaneum, honoring the patron of the city. It was buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE -- the same eruption that buried Pompeii. In the 19th Century, highly skilled artisans in Italy made miniature copies of Classical works of art such as this and sold them to the wealthy who were embarked on what was referred to as the "Grand Tour" of Europe. This particular equestrian piece has very fine detail and is an accurate copy of the original. NOTE: there is some dark green coloration on the base and the horse's chest that does not show up well in photography and is barely noticeable in reality.
