Grand Tour Pompeii Bronze of Silenus, Greek God of Wine
About the Item
Superior quality large scale Italian Grand Tour bronze of the god Silenus after the Roman original excavated at Pompeii in 1864. This very fine cast shows the god holding aloft a coiled snake. It is believed the original sculpture held a glass orb oil lamp. With a rich verdigris surface.
In Greek mythology, Silenus was a companion and tutor to the wine god Dionysus.
Nice scale at 25 inches high 12 diameter.
