"Hand to Head, " Rare, Art Deco Sculpture with Female Figure in Blue and Green

About the Item

Beautifully glazed in tones of pale taupe, sea blue and soft green, this rare sculpture depicting a female figure robed in Classical garb was made by Kieler Kunst-Keramic in Kiel, Germany in the mid-1920s. Known by Art Deco collectors for its exquisite colors and high-style forms, porcelains from Kieler Kunst were produced for only a few short years in the mid to-late 1920s as this new modern style took hold across Europe. Here a woman is shown with her hand to her head, sitting on a base vivid with dripping glazes, and with flowers on the ground behind her. The two leading sculptors at Kieler during this time were Augusta Kaiser and Hedwig Marquardt, who went to Kiel in 1924 and produced a range of superb sculptural pieces over a two-year period.
