Large 18th-Century Derby Porcelain Figure Emblematic of Africa

Large Derby Porcelain Figure of Africa, From a series known as the "Four Quarters". Circa 1765 The large figure, emblematic of Africa, is depicted as a black figure of a boy in in elephant headdress scantily draped in a turquoise-lined pink gilt-flowered cloak suspended from his right shoulder on a strap and fallen to his waist, holding a cornucopia filled with flowers in one hand and a scorpion in the other. He stands over a wild cat on a circular base with applied flowers. The flat underside of the base with patch marks. The figure is from a series known as the "Four Quarters". Dimensions: 9 1/2 high x 4 1/2 inches wide Provenance: The Collection of Pierre Durand; With The Chinese Porcelain Company. Reference: Derby Porcelain: The Golden Years 1750-1770, Dennis G.     Wear consistent with age and use. Good with minor frits to a couple of the applied flowers on the base at the back. A leg of the scorpion missing- not apparant.
