Pair of Derby Mansion House Dwarf Figures porcelain, 19th Century

About the Item

These are a pair of Derby Porcelain "Mansion House" Dwarfs or "Grotesque Punches" both with incised model numbers and dating to the 19th century. Both figures, male and female are modeled wearing a comically large hat (used to bear an advertisement) with rotund belly's and standing on grassy mound bases. Both figures are boldly hand enamelled and gilded. The original Georgian Derby versions of these figures, dating back to circa 1800, would have had moulded flowers on the grassy mound bases. These figures have 3 digit incised marks to the base; 384 on the male and 383 on the female one, together with an incised D. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History / References These popular figures are thought to either be based upon Chelsea's models of dwarfs after engravings by Calloto or, more likely, the dwarfs that stood outside the Mansion House in London. This second hypothesis seems more likely as the advertisements on their hats seem to refer to the practice of 'attaching advertisements to the Mansion House figures'. See the book : Derby Porcelain by John Twitchett, page 143.
