Large Antique Pair of Bronze Sphinxs on Rocky Bases

About the Item

This unusual pair of sphinxes resting upon rocky large bases are French we believe. Modeled and cast around the time of Carter's discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and showing some deco elements to the way the headdress and face is presented. The large castings are patinated in two colors to set off the figures which are green from the rockwork bases which are brown. Large enough to be fire dogs but clearly not as they have no heat damage or indication of the element that would have extended back and into the fire, these free-standing sculptures are impressive and dramatic. The casting and modeling is well done and thoughtful throughout, and the figures have great surface and just the right amount of wear and rub through to the patina.
