Pair of French 19th-20th Century Neoclassical Style Cast Iron Figural Torchères
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine pair of French 19th-20th century neoclassical style patinated cast iron figural torchères by A. Durenne, Paris, each representing a figure of a standing young maiden, her arms raised forward while holding a a flaming urn gas light (Now electrified) with a frosted glass flame, each raised on a veined grey marble column stand, both cast-signed 'A. Durenne, Paris'. Antoine Durenne was an internationally renowned French art founder. He attended École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1842. Durenne purchased a small foundry in Sommevoire, near the Val d'Osne, Haute-Marne, France and established The Durenne firm, circa Paris, 1900. Cast-iron had been in production during the 18th century but its inferior status to the more fashionable and delicate wrought iron had generally confined its use to architectural work. By the early 19th century, however, rapid developments of the Industrial Revolution combined with the simultaneous burgeoning of a new middle class provided the impetus for a dramatic Expansion in its application and in a short space of time a proliferation of iron foundries across Europe and America thrived on the production of everything from inkstands to railway stations. The use of cast-iron for garden ornament became particularly widespread at this time, as the possibilities for its mass-production at a fraction of the cost of bronze made it the material of choice for outdoor statuary...

Gaston Leroux Bronze Figure of Aida on a Sphinx, French, 19th Century
By Gaston Vuevenot Leroux
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gaston Leroux (French, 1854-1942). A very fine French 19th century polychromed and patinated bronze sculpture of "Aida" resting on a sphinx, her legs crossed and holding a gilt-bronze tambourine, after the model by Gaston Veuvenot Leroux "Aida, A Femme Au Tambourin Assise Sur Une Tete De Sphinx". Signed: Gaston Leroux, Paris, circa 1890. Measures: Height 29 inches (74 cm). Width 15 inches (38.1 cm). Depth 15 inches (38.1 cm). The opulent and extensively detailed version of Aida was inspired by ethnographic findings of the mid-19th century in ancient Egypt as well as the influences of theatre and costume design. Travelers to the East had often recorded their journeys, either in writing or in pictures, but the movement of Egyptomania was wider-reaching than Egyptology. The immensely popular vogue of Egyptomania is without doubt due to the success of performing arts in recreating this era, in particular, Giuseppe Verdi's Aida. Both the Cairo and Paris premieres created sensations so large that they influenced generations of artists from Alexander Cabanel to Cecil de Mille. In Aida, the ruins of Egypt were brought back to life in full color and scale before the eyes of a generation that would make history as romantics, adventurers and explorers. The Cairo premier of Aida was entirely conceived by one of the foremost Egyptologists of the day, Auguste Mariette, who was assigned to the project by Khedive Ismail Pasha...

Rare Bronze & Black Marble Clock Set by Deniere A Paris the Philosopher, c.1860
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare & fabulous Antique Napoleon lll clock garniture with incredible quality bronze sculptures. You will rarely see a clock garniture with bronzes of this quality and detail. The bearded thinker/philosopher on top of the marble clock is simply astonishing. His natural poisture, his hair, face and hands, but also his clothes, it is all of a quality and detail that only a master sculptor can achieve. And the patina also is just perfect. The philosopher is marked on the back and it reads 'BE x'. The two bronze female (classical maiden) sculptures are in fact two stunning candle holders and they too stand on beautifully shaped black marble bases with cartouches. These majestic candle holders are marked on the sides 'L.V.E. ROBERT' (Louis Valentin Elias Robert) and on the back they read 'AD x'. The black marble clock comes with a circular dial face with gilt Roman numerals and this clock has a well working movement. The movement is stamped 'DENIERE / A PARIS' and '2165'. On the bottom it reads A.Blacher and there also is a cachet with 'MEDAILLE D'OR / Paris / 1827'. If you like this one of a kind, clock set as much as we do then you will love our price. Especially, since perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days are complimentary. "Poésie" a 19th Century French Polychromed Symbolist Marble Sculpture
By Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
"Poésie" a 19th century French Polychromed Symbolist marble sculpture A Carrare, Sienna and very rare Skyros Marbles Symbolist Sculpture Group. Figuring Poetry under the appearance of Dante and Béatrice resting on a rock, Dante holding in his hand a parchment titled "Poetry". It rests on a Neo-Renaissance moulded and hand-carved walnut rotating sellette, the barrel consists of three fluted Corinthian columns, decorated with foliage at the base, resting on a truncated column decorated with female masks connected by a drape. It’s joined, in the upper part, by arcatures with a background of foliated foliage and masks of women crowned alternately with cutout RT monogram. Moulded triangular base, with curved sides and rising from lobed angles with a frieze of oves at the base. Circa 1870 Measures: Sculpture: H. 75 CM • 29 1/2 IN. Sellette: H. 112 CM W. 44 CM - D. 49 CM H 44 1/8 IN. W 17 3/8 IN. D 19 1/4 IN. The poetry of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) Beatrice Portinari, simply known as Beatrice or Beatrix, commonly refers to the muse of Dante Alighieri, whom he glorifies and loves. But she is also a woman whom, if one follows the New Life, Dante loved from his childhood, and to whom he dedicated a place in all his works. More sensitive than all is the resolute amplification which, after the pathetic force and expressionist intensity of Hell, intensifies with the more elegiac and penetrating emotion of Purgatory and leads to the miraculous triumph of the imaginary in Paradise. Of the three «hymns», it is Hell which is the most known, the most popular one can say: the taste of the picturesque, spread by the romantic criticism, is much to it. Dante, however, had the conviction, repeatedly affirmed in his poem, that by rising from one kingdom to another, he raised his poetry each time by a level which made it worthy of an ever more «high» matter. At a distance of six and a half centuries, there is certainly no obligation to share this view, however assured it may be for the poet. Anyone, however, who wants to enter the world of the Comedy must refuse the scale, eliminatory in its consequences of fact, which puts such a section above the other or brings the Comedy to a rosary of episodes more or less «beautiful» Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti (12 May 1828 – 9 April 1882), generally known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti...
