John Dickinson Hand Carved Maple Burl Wood Sculptural Bowl, 1997

About the Item

A fantastic live edge organic sculpture constructed from a solid piece of maple burl wood. Modern style with a heavy weight, spikes to side and recessed bowl to center. Signed to bottom 1997. Biography: John Dickinson was born and raised in Delaware. During and immediately after high school, John worked with contractors as a framer building houses in the Wilmington area. From 1978 to 1982, John served the country in the US Coast Guard. In 1985, after earning a BA in geography with a minor in photography at the University of Delaware, John married and moved west to Oregon. After another short period of housebuilding as an independent contractor, John enrolled at Oregon State University, earning a BA in Art in 1989. A self-built lathe enabled John to begin his career as a woodturner. As he learned more of the techniques of woodturning his forms began to be more complex evolving into thin walled vessels with laminations of domestic and exotic hardwoods. From work coming strictly from the lathe, John began to experiment with carving and his work has now evolved into sculptural forms transcending “craft” and successfully challenging the art world. John’s work is now finding its way into the most important private collections in the country.
