Rockingham Rare Treacle Glazed Smoking Scene Pottery Flask
About the Item
A rare late Georgian treacle glazed flask with original carrying handle decorated with smoking scenes attributed to Rockingham and dating from around 1820/30. The earthenware flask is lightly potted and of rounded shape with a small cylindrical shape pouring spout. The body of the flask is relied molded with a seated man in a tree lined landscape smoking a pipe and repeated to both sides of the flask. On both sides the scene is set within a fruiting vine border. The flask is decorated in brown treacle glazes with an original leather carrying strap attached by its original sealed and braided string binding. The flask is not marked and a rare find in this fully original condition.
Provenance: acquired in the British art market.
In good condition with a very small glaze chip to the edge of the spout and a couple of firing glaze bubble bursts.
