19th Century French Hand Painted Porcelain Vase with Snake Handles from Gien

About the Item

Created in France circa 1890 by the faiencerie de Gien, the antique vase is round in shape and stands on a circular base decorated with bird and leaf motifs. The large vessel features two twisted snake handles over the colorful rim and wide neck. The ceramic vase is decorated with hand painted grotesque, coat of arms and crest motifs throughout. The elegant porcelain piece is in excellent condition with rich painted colors in a Classic blue, green and mustard palette. The Faïencerie de Gien is a faience (or earthenware) factory in Gien, France which was was founded in 1821 by Thomas Edme Hulm. The company became known as “Gien Faiencerie” in 1875 when it became a public company. Production first began with functional tableware, and then went on to make fancier dinnerware, decorative pieces and tableware emblazoned with notable families’ coats of arms, calling on the Savoir-Faire of talented potters. The peak of the production of faience of Gien took place between 1855 and 1900 at the time of the famous Universal Exhibitions, during which the company won numerous awards.
