Black Chinese Clay Vessel, c. 1900

About the Item

Sculpted during the early 20th century in China's Shanxi province, this vessel has a smoky black exterior on one side that transitions into a golden brown on the other. With balanced proportions and a beautifully irregular unglazed surface, this vessel was once used for storing dry goods. The earthenware jar has a tapered form with a narrow base, high shoulders and a rounded neck. Left undecorated, the jar has a quiet beauty, patterned only by firing imperfections and the brushed texture of its speckled slip clay finish. With rich surface texture, we love this storied vessel as a planter for garden foliage or indoor houseplants. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of Opening: 7.25"
