Cobridge English Stoneware Abstract Design Art Pottery Vase

About the Item

A striking Cobridge stoneware art pottery vase decorated with abstract designs, signed to base and dated 24th August 1999. The vase is of tall elegant shape standing on a skirted rounded base with a narrow lower body widening towards the top with a slightly raised narrow opening. The body of the vase is decorated with abstract blood red patch designs down one side of the vase and with a blue net design to the opposite side, both on a mottled grey glazed ground and allowing the vase to be rotated to enjoy different aspects. The vase has impressed makers marks to the base along with initials PAS and artist marks KR with date 24/8/99 painted below. In excellent condition and a stunning example.

    An exceptional, impressive unique Cobridge pottery ruskin glazed vase by Anita Harris and glazed by Justin Emery and dating from around 2000. The large round bulbous stoneware vase stands on a round skirted base with a widening round body and short flared top rim. The body of the vase is decorated in high fired deep red glazes with green almost textured like markings and with a deep blue interior. The vase bears various impressed makers marks to the base and comes with an original Certificate of Authenticity recording this as a Trial Piece by Anita Harris and bearing her signature. The vase further has a red paper label from the Henry Sandon Collection sale at Mallams, Oxford on 23rd May 2012. Is that the vases are now becoming very rare and demanding premium prices on the secondary market. Hugh Edwards, owner of Moorcroft, was keen to develop the ideas of William Howson Taylor - the man behind the closely guarded secrets of Ruskin Pottery. A new company and name was needed for the new range - Moorcroft is known and recognized universally by its distinctive appearance. Cobridge, an area of The Potteries, was featured in the Industrial Landscapes that were planned to furnish some of the designs for the new range. Its skyline was dominated in earlier years by bottle kilns, now mainly demolished, and Cobridge was chosen as the new name. The Cobridge Pottery was set up in a new imposing building a couple of hundred yards from the Moorcroft pottery and the official opening was in September 1998. The building was designed with future needs in mind. Only the outer walls are load-bearing, and the inner walls are built from blocks which can, if the need arises, be knocked down and re-built in another place. All the pieces were produced and hand painted here. The designs for Cobridge Stoneware Pottery vases were designed by well known ceramic designers. Many were also designing for Moorcroft Pottery.
