Large French Hand Painted Vase
About the Item
This large French porcelain hand painted and gilded vase features two colourful birds perched on branches in a forest setting surrounded by blossoms and coloured leaves, on a pale lilac ground. The handles are mythical winged serpents and their black, green and gilt colouring contrasts nicely with the lilac ground. It stands 400 mm (15.75 inches) high, measures 260 mm (10.25 inches) across, including the handles, and is 150 mm (6 inches) deep. It is quite thickly potted and weighs 3.3 kg (7.25 lbs). There are no cracks or chips, but there is some rubbing to the gilding, mainly to the rim, and some slight loss to the handles. It would date to the 1880s.
