Hand Painted Jardiniere by Ulysse Besnard of Blois

About the Item

This very large bombe shaped two handled faience jardiniere is by Ulysse Besnard of Blois, France, and rests on four feet. The hand painted decoration includes swirling arabesques and dragons, and on each side in a central cartouche is a hand painted fire-breathing salamander entwined around the letter F. This salamander was the emblem of Francois 1 of France (reigned 1515-47) who undertook renovations and extensions to Blois castle. It measures 500 mm (19.75 inches) in width, is 340 mm (13.5 inches) deep and stands 205 mm (8 inches) high. Overall it is in good condition, however it does have some shallow cracks to the underside of the base, which can be seen in the photo of the mark. It is dated 1879.
